What happens

Screen Directors Playhouse presents a radio adaptation of The Killers, broadcast on June 5, 1949, starring Burt Lancaster and Shelley Winters. A garage attendant named Swede, who has been living quietly in Brentwood, is visited by two gunmen seeking to kill him. Swede's past is traced through a boxing career, a stolen brooch, and a planned payroll robbery. Friends and former associates are questioned, and the story turns on Swede's relationship with Kitty Collins and with Jim Colfax, the man who organized the robbery.

Brentwood, New Jersey, and earlier Hollywood-style urban settings including a nightclub, an apartment, a hotel in Atlantic City, and a farmhouse on the North Turnpike.

Characters: Swede, Nick Adams, Kitty Collins, Jim Colfax, Blinky Franklin, Sam Reden, Queenie

Listen for: Listen for the flashback structure, which moves between Swede's present-day situation and his past.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
