What happens

Kendall Browning, the efficient private secretary of cement company owner Stephen Dexter, has long loved her boss in silence. When Stephen faces a court injunction that would freeze all his property, a lawyer suggests he marry quickly so his assets can be placed in a wife's name. Stephen's first choice, model Phyllis Walden, refuses, and Kendall agrees to a marriage of convenience. The episode is a comedy from the Screen Director's Guild series Screen Directors Playhouse, first broadcast on February 6, 1949, with Rosalind Russell starring and William Seiter directing.

New York and Charleston, in the offices of the Stephen Dexter cement company and the homes of its owner and his lawyer.

Characters: Kendall Browning, Stephen Dexter, Phyllis Walden, Roger Van Horn, Latimer

Listen for: Kendall's dry, businesslike replies to Stephen's bluster, and the lawyer Roger's quips when the marriage plan takes shape.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
