What happens

Helen Hudson, the widow of a respected surgeon, is at the center of a tense operation as she recalls the events that led to her current situation. Years earlier, her husband Wayne Hudson drowned at a lake while a wealthy playboy, Robert Merrick, was nearly drowning nearby, and the respirator needed to save her husband was taken to the playboy's care. Helen resolves to hate Merrick, but after a chance meeting in a park, where Merrick reads to her as she learns Braille, a growing bond develops between them. This is the Screen Director's Guild presentation of Magnificent Obsession, adapted from the Lloyd C. Douglas novel, broadcast on NBC Theater on February 13, 1949, starring Irene Dunn as Helen Hudson and Willard Waterman as Robert Merrick.

Listen for: Helen's recollections of the lake tragedy and her growing bond with Robert Merrick during her time learning Braille in the park

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
