What happens

Judith Truherne, a wealthy, independent woman, is thrown from a horse after a fall on her estate and begins suffering severe headaches. Her secretary, Anne King, watches her refuse medical help, until Dr. Frederick Steele, who has been asked to take on her case, insists on examining her. The Screen Director's Playhouse presents this adaptation of Dark Victory, starring Tallulah Bankhead and David Brian, with the episode airing on NBC on February 15, 1951. Steele begins a series of tests on Judith, whose growing sense of defiance and vulnerability marks the early part of the story.

Judith Truherne's estate and a doctor's office and hospital in an unspecified city.

Characters: Judith Truherne, Anne King, Dr. Frederick Steele, Dr. Parsons

Listen for: Dr. Steele's careful questioning of Judith about her headaches and her eyesight, and her defiant insistence that she is well.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
