About Saturday Mornings

Saturday Mornings is a free Saturday morning cartoon radio station and daily podcast from Stupid Potato: cartoon theme songs and the commercials that ran between them, for toys, cereal, candy and games, from the 1950s to the 1990s. Your host is Lucky, a cartoon dog in a blue cap and a striped tee, broadcasting from the family TV room for grown-ups who were once the kids in footie pajamas. Listen free online, live 24 hours a day, or catch the daily 15-minute episode as a podcast.

For American kids from the 1960s on, the networks' Saturday morning cartoon block was a weekly ritual: The Flintstones and The Jetsons in reruns, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! from 1969, The Smurfs in the 80s. Between the cartoons came the ads that sold the whole experience: Cap'n Crunch, Trix and Lucky Charms, Atari games, G.I. Joe and Ghostbusters toys. By the 1980s the line had blurred completely, as He-Man, The Transformers and G.I. Joe were built around toy lines and their theme songs doubled as commercials.

Lucky is funny for grown-ups: wry about "part of this complete breakfast" and "batteries not included," keen on squirrels, wary of the vacuum, never mean. Saturday Mornings is for Gen Xers and younger boomers who remember the sugar rush, parents who want to show their kids what cartoons sounded like, and collectors of toy and cereal ads. Put it on with a bowl of cereal, on a road trip or at a retro party.
