What happens
Sam Spade is hired by gambling club owner Johnny McCall to return a valuable diamond necklace called the Tears of Night to Daphne Arlington, who lost it at the roulette table. When Spade delivers the necklace, he discovers the situation is far more complex than a simple retrieval job, involving a dangerous jewelry appraiser, a fake duplicate necklace, and multiple murders that threaten to destroy Daphne's life.
