What happens
Ted Sloane, home on furlough from the Army, visits his old friend Henry at Ranger Headquarters, where they meet Ranger Bill. Ted confides that he is struggling with ribbing and ridicule from his fellow soldiers because of his Christian stand, and he worries he may not hold up under it. Bill, who served as a Navy medic, begins telling Ted about his own experience of being mocked for his faith during his military training and assignment at a Marine base in North Carolina. Bill recalls how his conduct was tested by a hard-driving sergeant. The story is told in the present tense as Bill speaks of his time in the service.
Ranger Headquarters, with the story moving to a Navy boot camp, the Marine base at New River, North Carolina, and the Carolina backcountry during maneuvers.
Characters: Ranger Bill, Ted Sloane, Henry, Bill (Navy medic, Ranger Bill's own account), Sergeant Clarence Donovan (Buck), Bert Marshall, Major Parks, Cliff
Listen for: Ted's worry about standing firm under persecution, and Bill's account of how Sergeant Donovan's treatment of him changes after the maneuvers.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
