What happens
Ranger Bill, a forest ranger in the Wasatch Mountains, is puzzled by a timber cutter named Mr. DeLong who insists on cutting only certain trees while claiming to be a lumber expert. Bill grows suspicious when DeLong's stories do not match the facts, and he traces the man's background to New York City, where DeLong was an old book dealer. Bill connects DeLong's behavior to the Donner Party, the pioneers trapped by snow in 1846, and to the legend of their lost fortune. Bill's son Henry and the mountain man Caribou join the search, and the mystery turns on a Bible and a set of clues left behind from that winter.
