What happens

Private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by a worried real estate man named John Bishop to locate Dale Estes, an escaped convict who has just broken out of an Illinois prison and may be seeking revenge. Bishop fears Estes will strike during a masquerade party at the Pacific Palace that night, so Marlowe must find him before the evening festivities begin. Marlowe's search takes him through the shadowy streets of Los Angeles on Halloween, following slim leads and encountering various characters, while Bishop arranges a devil costume for Marlowe to wear to the masquerade.

Los Angeles on Halloween night, 1949; Spanish restaurants, gyms, fishing piers, a costume shop, and suburban Pacific Palisades

Characters: Philip Marlowe, John Bishop, Dale Estes, Madeline Hughes, Alberto Zendaro

Listen for: Marlowe's investigation through the city's underworld on Halloween; encounters at various locations where he searches for Estes; the mysterious visitor in a brown tweed suit; the fitting of Marlowe's devil costume at Zendaro's shop; Bishop's growing anxiety about the masquerade party that evening

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
