What happens

Phil Harris, playing himself, is filming an Air Force picture at Republic Studios and is cast as a flying sergeant. Driving home with his stand-in Frankie, he banters about his looks and his fear of heights, and he later reveals to his wife Alice and their children that he has never flown. The family teases him as he struggles to keep up his brave front. Harris says he will take the children flying, and Frankie helps him line up a trip to a flying school despite his reluctance. The program was first broadcast on NBC on May 20, 1951, with Harris and Alice Faye in the lead roles.

Hollywood, California, around 1951: a film set at Republic Studios, a drive home, the Harris family home, and a flying school.

Characters: Phil Harris, Frankie, Alice Faye, Curly, Remley, Julius

Listen for: Harris's bragging about his flying and his obvious nervousness as he agrees to take the children up in a plane.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
