What happens
Phil Harris, leader of his dance orchestra, lectures his musicians on discipline after a run of pay deductions and unpaid wages. He hires an eccentric gypsy-style trombonist and then sets out to dismiss his friend Elliot Lewis, who plays in the band. Alice Faye appears as Harris's wife. Set against a backdrop of comic arguments over music and money, the episode is a 1954 broadcast of The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show on NBC, which aired on February 19, 1954, with Harris and Faye in the lead roles.
A dance band's rehearsal room and a nearby kitchen in Los Angeles area, with the band leader's home life interwoven.
Characters: Phil Harris, Alice Faye, Elliot Lewis, Gale Gordon, Curly, Clyde, Julius, Bill Foreman
Listen for: Harris's stern speech to the band about discipline and the deductions from their pay, and the rehearsal in which the new trombone player is auditioned.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
