What happens

Fred Stevens, a songwriter from Connecticut, arrives in New York City by train with a letter of introduction to the composer Paul Sears. On the journey he chats with a candy butcher and a fellow passenger, Lucille, who talks about the banquet held in his honour and her own marriage. In the city he phones Sears, who welcomes him to his apartment, where Sears, his wife Lucille and her sister Eileen are at home in the evening. Sears's career and the state of his marriage come up as Stevens shows his lyrics. This is a Mercury Theatre on the Air production, presented as the Campbell Playhouse, broadcast on March 24, 1940, with Jack Benny in the lead role. The story is adapted from the play June Moon by Ring Lardner and George S. Kaufman.

New York City, a train bound for the city, and the apartment of Paul Sears

Characters: Fred Stevens, Paul Sears, Lucille, Eileen, Maxie, Mr. Hart, Mr. Schwartz, Mildred Crowell

Listen for: Jack Benny's comic performance as the naive songwriter Fred Stevens, and the rapid, overlapping banter between Stevens and the other characters

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
