About North Pole Radio: Holiday Specials

North Pole Radio: Holiday Specials is a free 24/7 old-time radio Christmas channel: classic Christmas radio shows from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, played complete and back to back, with vintage toy commercials at the breaks. It is the long-form sister of Santa's North Pole Radio. Listen online all year with no sign-up, no app and no ads of our own. The library holds more than 450 complete Christmas broadcasts and long-play holiday records, over 200 hours in all: dramatic readings of A Christmas Carol, Hollywood films turned into radio plays, children's Christmas serials and the holiday episodes of radio's biggest comedy shows.

Christmas week was radio's biggest week. Lionel Barrymore played Scrooge on the air nearly every Christmas from 1934 into the 1950s, and two of those performances are here: Good News of 1939 (December 1938) and the Campbell Playhouse A Christmas Carol of Christmas Eve 1939. Lux Radio Theater turned movies into hour-long radio plays with film stars in the leads, including Pinocchio on Christmas Day 1939 and Remember the Night (1940) with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. The Cinnamon Bear (1937), Jonathan Thomas and His Christmas on the Moon (1938) and Jump Jump and the Ice Queen (1948) were daily serials made for children counting down to Christmas. And the comedians made the holidays part of the act: Jack Benny's Christmas shopping trips (1936 to 1939), Fibber McGee and Molly (1940), Burns and Allen (1940), Lum and Abner (1938) and My Favorite Husband's "The Christmas Present Switch" (1949).

The shows run complete, so this is a channel to settle in with: put it on while you trim the tree, bake, wrap or drive to Grandma's, and let a whole half hour or hour play out. It is for old-time radio fans, families who want something gentler than the shopping-mall playlist, and anyone curious what Christmas sounded like before television. For short Christmas songs, novelty records, Santa's jokes and the daily Christmas podcast, switch to the main channel, Santa's North Pole Radio.

Questions

Is North Pole Radio: Holiday Specials free?

Yes. The live stream is free, with no account, no sign-up and no app to install. Stupid Potato has pledged to run no advertising of its own through February 14, 2027; the commercials at the breaks are the vintage toy ads, played on purpose as part of the channel.

Does it work on Alexa or a smart speaker?

Yes, with any speaker or app that can open a stream address. The stream is https://stupidpotato.com/north-pole-specials/live, a plain MP3 stream: paste it into VLC, a radio app that takes a custom URL, or your smart speaker's companion app and it plays.

When do the Christmas radio specials start?

They play all year. The channel streams complete Christmas broadcasts 24 hours a day, every day, so it is ready whenever you are. This channel is live only, with no podcast of its own; the daily Christmas podcast, with a new half-hour episode every day from October 1 through December 31, is on Santa's North Pole Radio.

Can I listen in my car or on my phone?

Yes. Open stupidpotato.com/north-pole-specials in your phone's browser and press Listen live. In the car, connect your phone over Bluetooth, CarPlay or Android Auto, or add the stream address to your car's internet radio app. A whole radio play fits a drive to Grandma's.

Who played Scrooge on old-time radio?

Lionel Barrymore was radio's best-known Scrooge, playing him in A Christmas Carol nearly every Christmas from 1934 into the 1950s. His 1938 Good News of 1939 and 1939 Campbell Playhouse performances both play on this channel.

What is The Cinnamon Bear?

A 1937 radio serial for children in which Judy and Jimmy Barton travel to Maybeland with Paddy O'Cinnamon, a little stuffed bear, to recover the silver star for their Christmas tree. Its short episodes were made to air daily in the weeks before Christmas, and stations replayed it every December for decades.

Is North Pole Radio: Holiday Specials free?
