What happens

Nick Carter becomes intrigued when he spots Colonel Pembert's wife pawning expensive pearls at a pawn shop. He investigates the situation at the racetrack where the Colonel's horse, Speed Queen, is heavily favored to win. However, the horse unexpectedly loses to Sonny Boy, and Nick discovers that a small-time tout named Pinky Deams somehow knew the outcome in advance and collected substantial winnings. When Nick tries to investigate further, he receives a mysterious and gruesome package at his office.
