What happens

Penny Baxter, a Civil War veteran living in the Florida scrub country, and his son Jody make their home in a remote pioneer settlement with his wife Ma. Jody longs for a pet of his own, while Penny and Ma argue over how strictly to raise the boy. Their life is one of hard labor and quiet losses, shaped by the frontier and the hardships of a family that has buried several children. Penny takes Jody on a bear hunt, and the boy's bond with the animal world begins to grow. The Lux Radio Theatre production stars Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman Jr. and is adapted from Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' novel The Yearling.

The Florida scrub country, a remote pioneer homestead near Juniper Creek, and the nearby town of Volusia.

Characters: Penny Baxter, Ma, Jody, Oliver Huddle, Doc Wilson, Buck Forrester, Fodder-Wing

Listen for: Jody's begging for a pet, and Ma's and Penny's quarrel over how strictly to raise the boy.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
