What happens

Dr. Corydon Wassell, a Navy doctor, is caught in the collapse of the Dutch East Indies in early 1942 when the Japanese advance on Java. After the cruiser Marblehead survives the Battle of the Java Sea, Wassell takes charge of a hospital train carrying wounded sailors inland. He tends the men, bonds with a Dutch nurse named Martha Schubert, and is reunited with Madeline Arnold, a nurse he knew in China. The story, from the Lux Radio Theatre's 1944 production starring Gary Cooper, follows the wounded men as their evacuation becomes uncertain and the fate of the hospital grows more precarious.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
