What happens

Dion and her sister Jan live in a Paris slum in 1914, just before the Great War. Chico, a sewer cleaner, is a cheerful atheist who befriends a young priest, Father Chevillon, after an incident with a stolen tin watch. Chico takes Dion in when her violent life with Papa Boule and the family grows unbearable. The episode is the first play presented on the Lux Radio Theatre, broadcast on October 16, 1944, with Jennifer Jones, Van Johnson, and Jean Hersholt in the leads, and Billy Gilbert as Boule.

Listen for: Chico's cheerful insistence that he is an atheist, and his repeated prayers with candles and money

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
