What happens
Lee Stevens, general manager of Todd's Toys in Lamont, Indiana, travels to Washington to seek a government contract that will let the factory convert to army ordinance. His new secretary, Jane Rogers, is a sharp but impulsive young woman, and the pair's plans quickly run into the city's wartime housing shortage. After Jane cancels his hotel reservation, they spend a rainy night sleeping under bronze horses in a park. Lee is now sick, and Jane finds them a tourist home. This is an episode of the Lux Radio Theatre, first broadcast on October 30, 1944, starring Paulette Goddard and Fred MacMurray.
Lamont, Indiana, and then wartime Washington, D.C.
Characters: Lee Stevens, Jane Rogers, T. J. Todd, Alice Todd, Peggy Fuller, Mr. Cromwell, Mr. Richie, Mr. Mason
Listen for: Jane's blunt refusal to be pushed around, and the comic exchanges as Lee tries to find a place to sleep in a crowded city.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
