What happens
Alan Squire, a disillusioned English drifter, stops at a roadside gas station and barbecue stand in the Arizona desert, where he meets Gabrielle Maple, a restless young woman who works there with her grandfather. Their conversation turns to dreams of France, art, and purpose, and Gabrielle sees in Alan a way out of her dull life. Meanwhile, the notorious gangster Duke Mantee and his men are on the run after a bank robbery, and the police are searching for them along the highway. This Lux Radio Theatre production of The Petrified Forest, starring Herbert Marshall and Margaret Sullivan, was first broadcast on November 22, 1937.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
