What happens

Montgomery Royal, a famous American pianist touring France, is a celebrated concert performer whose life is changed when he is struck by sudden deafness. His sister Florence and his companion Mildred Miller stand by him as he meets the young Grace Blair, who loves him and whose attention his sister watches with concern. Starring George Arliss with Florence Arliss and Dolores Costello in this Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the film The Man Who Played God, the story follows Royal as he withdraws from the world, unable to hear the music he once made. The episode is part of the Lux Radio Theatre series, first broadcast on March 21, 1938.

Paris, France, and later New York City

Characters: Montgomery Royal, Florence Royal, Mildred Miller, Grace Blair, Battle, Harold Van Allen, Madame Lavelle, Florence

Listen for: Royal's realization, after going deaf, that he can still find meaning in life, and the sincere attention he gives to others in his isolation

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
