What happens

Mike Regan, the political and financial boss of a Middle Western city, faces pressure from his old friend the Archbishop to aid the poor tenement district he owns. Regan resists, preferring to keep his business running, while the Griswold family's company struggles against his underbidding. Donald Griswold confronts Regan, and Regan later visits the Griswolds' home to make a proposal to Griswold's daughter, Emily, which her father rejects. Lux Radio Theater presents this 1938 episode of the series, starring Edward Arnold, Fay Ray and H.B. Warner, as an adaptation of Edward Sheldon's melodrama The Boss.

A Middle Western city, including its tenement district of Chantytown, the Griswold home, and the Regan office.

Characters: Mike Regan, Archbishop, Emily Griswold, Donald Griswold, Mr. Griswold, Paul King, Mr. Egan

Listen for: Regan's first meeting with Emily and his later proposal scene with her and her father.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
