What happens

Jerry Warriner returns from a supposed Florida trip and finds his wife Lucy gone, leaving him suspicious that she has spent time with another man. Their heated argument over lies and trust sets them on the road to divorce, and a dispute over their dog Mr. Smith becomes a comic courtroom matter. Jerry and Lucy each find new romantic prospects, and jealousy, pride and misunderstanding keep stirring between them. This is the Lux Radio Theatre presentation of The Awful Truth, starring Claudette Colbert and Cary Grant, with Phyllis Brooks, and it is part of the program's 1939 season opening. The story is a screwball comedy of a couple who cannot quite let each other go.

Midtown Manhattan, including an athletic club, the Warriners' home and an apartment building, with a courthouse scene.

Characters: Jerry Warriner, Lucy Warriner, Aunt Patsy, Frank, Dan Leeson, Bob Wright, Joe, Hank

Listen for: Jerry's accusations of Florida lies and Lucy's sharp rebuttals, the courtroom dispute over Mr. Smith the dog, and Lucy's announcement that she likes Dan Leeson.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
