What happens
Lord Burnstead's valet Ruggles learns he has been lost at cards to an American couple, the Floods, and is handed over to them. He travels with Egg Floud and his wife Effie to Red Gap, Washington, where Effie plans to make him a proper servant. Ruggles is shocked by the frank, easygoing manners of the West. Egg Floud, now a changed man after drinking in Paris, befriends a rough local named Jeff Tuttle and takes Ruggles to a boisterous gathering. Effie's sister and the Pettingales receive the new arrivals, and Ruggles begins to mingle with the townsfolk. This is the Lux Radio Theatre's 1939 production of Ruggles of Red Gap, broadcast on July 10, 1939, starring Charles Laughton with Zasu Pitts and Charlie Ruggles.
Paris in April, then Red Gap, Washington, in the American West
Characters: Ruggles, Egg Floud, Effie Floud, Jeff Tuttle, Mrs. Judson, Belknap Jackson, Marmaduke Pettingill, Lord Burnstead
Listen for: Ruggles' reactions to the frank manners of the American West, and Egg Floud's transformation after the Paris drinking episode
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
