What happens

Lux Radio Theatre presents Strawberry Blonde, a New York story set in 1900 with Biff Grimes, a dentist recently out of jail, and his barber friend Nick. Biff is still bitter about Hugo Barnstead, who won Virginia Brush a decade earlier after Biff had hoped to court her. When Hugo unexpectedly arrives at Biff's dental office with a toothache, Biff's old resentment resurfaces, and the rivalry is reawakened. Meanwhile Amy, a nurse, is introduced as Virginia's friend and a sharp-tongued suffragette sympathiser. This 1942 broadcast stars Rita Hayworth, Dennis Morgan and Gail Patrick, with Louis Alberni as Nick.

New York City, 1900, a quiet street and Biff Grimes's dental office and barbershop, plus a park on a Sunday.

Characters: Biff Grimes, Nick, Hugo Barnstead, Virginia Brush, Amy Lind

Listen for: The awkward reunion between Biff and Hugo in the dental office, and Biff's barbed memories of the day Hugo won Virginia.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
