What happens

Pilot Peter Carter bails out of his burning bomber over the English coast in 1945 without a parachute, believing he is about to die. He lands alive, and after an exchange over the radio with an American woman named June, he finds himself at a place where a Frenchman, a heavenly messenger, insists he must be taken to heaven. Carter refuses to go, and insists on appealing the matter. Lux Radio Theatre presents this 1955 broadcast, first aired on April 12, 1955, adapting the film Stairway to Heaven. David Niven and Bob Roorush take the lead roles in this fantasy romance drama.

Over the North Sea and the English coast in 1945, and later a celestial place of stairways and courtrooms.

Characters: Peter Carter, June, Abraham Farman, Dr. Reed, Dr. McKeon, Dr. Lee, Dr. Ead

Listen for: Carter's radio exchange with June as he bails out, and his confrontation with the heavenly messenger over whether he can appeal.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
