What happens

In Paris in the weeks before the First World War, Dione, a young woman from the slums, is helped by Father Chevillon after she is caught up in a petty theft. Chico, a sewer worker who calls himself an atheist, is drawn into her troubles when her abusive sister Nana causes trouble, and the two begin to grow close. Their lives change as they try to find courage and a place for themselves in a crowded, hard quarter of the city. This is the Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of Seventh Heaven, broadcast on March 26, 1951, starring Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. The episode opens with an introduction to the film's Academy Award history before the drama begins.

Paris, 1914, in the poor quarter of the city, with its slums, streets and sewers, as the First World War approaches.

Characters: Dione, Chico, Father Chevillon, Papa Boul, Nana, Miss Ypressek

Listen for: Chico's claims about prayer and his atheism, and how his conversations with Dione change them both.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
