What happens
Captain Brown, a young village doctor, and the Frostall sisters, Phoebe and Susan, share a gentle friendship on Quality Street in an English town during the Napoleonic wars. Phoebe hopes Brown will propose, but he sets off for the army, and the sisters are left to manage their lessened fortune. Years later Brown returns, and Phoebe, now a schoolmistress, must confront how time has changed her. Lux Radio Theatre presented this adaptation of Sir James Barry's play on September 14, 1936, starring Ruth Chatterton and Brian Aherne, with Kathleen Lockhart as Susan.
An English town in the early 19th century, during the Napoleonic wars, at the Throssel home on Quality Street and later the sisters' schoolroom.
Characters: Phoebe Throssel, Susan Throssel, Valentine Brown, Libby Throssel
Listen for: Phoebe's hopes for Valentine Brown's proposal, and the sisters' reaction when he announces his enlistment and later returns.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
