What happens

Hazel Flag, a young woman from a small village, learns she is dying of radium poisoning and is brought to New York by Wallace Cook, a reporter for the Morning Star, who sees a story in her. Lux Radio Theatre presents Nothing Sacred, first broadcast on November 11, 1940, with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as Wally Cook and Joan Bennett as Hazel Flag. In the city, Hazel is welcomed as a celebrity, and the newspaper and the public embrace her courage. Cook, once a jaded reporter, begins to see the situation differently as Hazel enjoys her new life. The episode follows the early days of the publicity.

A small village, then New York City, in the 1940s

Characters: Hazel Flag, Wallace Cook, Oliver Stone, Enoch Downer

Listen for: Hazel's first night of celebrity in New York and Wally Cook's growing doubts about the publicity

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
