What happens
Philip Ashley, a young man who has inherited his cousin Ambrose's estate, grows suspicious of Rachel, Ambrose's widow, after Ambrose dies suddenly in Florence. Philip is uneasy about the circumstances of the death and the letters Ambrose wrote before it. When Rachel arrives at the family estate in Cornwall, Philip invites her to stay, and their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as he weighs his feelings against his doubts. Based on Daphne du Maurier's novel, this 1953 Lux Radio Theatre broadcast stars Olivia de Havilland as Rachel and Ron Randell as Philip, and it was first aired on 7 September 1953. The episode presents the early events of the story, including the estate dealings, the necklace and the mounting tension between Philip and Rachel.
