What happens

On a stormy night off the English coast, the Marquis de Mirepoix's hairdresser, who is secretly the escaped Duke d'Orléans, arrives at Bath under the name Monsieur Bocaire. Bocaire is said to be a Frenchman of rank in exile, and he becomes a fixture in the town's society, where he pursues the lovely Lady Mary Carlisle and gambles at a private house. Major Malano, an agent of the English king, becomes suspicious of him. The episode is adapted from Booth Tarkington's novel and was broadcast by the Lux Radio Theatre on Monday, June 21, 1937, with Leslie Howard and Elissa Landi in the leading roles.

A ship bound for Dover off the coast of England, and then the fashionable spa town of Bath in the early eighteenth century.

Characters: Monsieur Bocaire, Lady Mary Carlisle, Major Malano, Captain Badger, Lord Winterset, Francois, Marquis de Mirepoix

Listen for: Bocaire's first meeting with Lady Mary, and Malano's suspicion of him.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
