What happens

Fred Chambers and his wife Joan work at J.J. Benson's Fifth Avenue dress shop in New York, saving money with their eyes set on starting a family. On Christmas Eve, Fred is kept late by the store's demanding owner, Madam Benson, and he returns home to a practical budget discussion about their savings and a debt owed to Uncle George. Joan is pleased with a small present, but money worries continue to press on the young couple. The Lux Radio Theatre presents this 1941 episode, which stars Dick Powell and Joan Blondell and first aired on 1941-05-19.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
