What happens

Ben Tyler searches the Okefenokee swamp for his lost dog and is captured by Jim Harper and his daughter Laurie, who have lived hidden there for years. Ben has been wrongly suspected of a killing eight years earlier. Lux Radio Theatre presents this 1953 adaptation, broadcast on May 25, 1953, starring Jean Peters and Jeffrey Hunter. The story follows Ben as he begins to trust Laurie, and as the two of them consider whether Jim's past can be cleared and whether a life outside the swamp is possible.

The Okefenokee swamp in southeastern Georgia, and a nearby village, around 1910.

Characters: Ben Tyler, Laurie Harper, Jim Harper, Paul Tyler, Noreen McGowan, Dan McGowan

Listen for: Ben's dog and the swamp markers he memorises, and Laurie's growing wish to leave the swamp.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
