What happens
Johnny Eager, a former convict now working as a taxi driver, is secretly still running rackets in a city where his new dog track is being blocked from opening. His lieutenant Marco and his rival-in-business Lou Rankin press him for answers as a new city prosecutor, Harold Farrell, closes in. Johnny's relationship with Elizabeth Farrell, the prosecutor's stepdaughter, complicates matters further, and Johnny's partner Jeff dispenses literary quotations as the pressure builds. This episode of Lux Radio Theatre, first broadcast on January 21, 1946, stars Robert Taylor as Johnny, Susan Peters as Elizabeth, and Van Heflin as Jeff, and is adapted from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film.
A large city, with a newly built dog track near the edge of town, a taxi cab, a shabby port nightclub, and the homes of the characters.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
