What happens
Jane Eyre, a young governess, arrives at Thornfield Hall to care for Adele, a ward of its brooding master, Edward Rochester. Jane is drawn into the household's strange secrets: an unseen woman's laughter echoing from the tower, a mysterious fire in Rochester's room, and the reticent Grace Poole, who keeps watch over the upper floors. Rochester is gruff and unpredictable, yet he gradually comes to rely on Jane's quiet company. This Lux Radio Theatre production, first broadcast on June 14, 1948, stars Ingrid Bergman as Jane and Robert Montgomery as Rochester, adapted from Charlotte Brontë's novel. Jane's growing suspicion leads her to the tower, where she discovers a disturbing truth.
Nineteenth-century England, chiefly Thornfield Hall, a remote estate on the Yorkshire moors, and the charity school Lowood.
Characters: Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester, Adele, Mrs. Fairfax, Mr. Brocklehurst, Grace Poole, Mr. Mason, Lady Ingram
Listen for: The eerie laughter from the tower and Grace Poole's evasive replies.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
