What happens

Mama, the matriarch of a Norwegian-American family in San Francisco, manages the household budget while her children Katrin, Christine and Nels grow up. Uncle Chris, a gruff old bachelor, lies gravely ill, and his housekeeper and niece Marta tend to him. Mr. Hyde, a lodger, tells a story that inspires Katrin's wish to become a writer. Money is tight, debts pile up, and the family faces decisions about the children's schooling and their parents' expectations. The episode is a dramatized adaptation of Kathryn Forbes's stories, presented on the Lux Radio Theatre series, first broadcast on 1948-08-30.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
