What happens
Jane Eyre, a young governess, arrives at Thornfield Hall to care for Adele, the ward of its master, Edward Rochester. Rochester is a brooding, unpredictable man who keeps largely away from the house. Jane grows fond of Adele and begins to puzzle over the house's secrets: a strange laugh echoing from the tower, and a fire that breaks out in Rochester's room one night. This Lux Radio Theatre production, broadcast on June 5, 1944, stars Orson Welles as Rochester and Loretta Young as Jane. Adapted from Charlotte Bronte's novel, the episode tells its story in dramatised scenes.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
