What happens

Mr. Chipping, a shy and aging schoolmaster at Brookfield School, dozes by the fire and recalls his early years at the school. Lawrence Olivier plays the title role in this Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of James Hilton's novel Goodbye, Mr. Chips, with Edna Best as Catherine. Chipping is a young master, uneasy with discipline, who is assigned a troublesome class and is initially unsure of himself among the boys. Later he meets Catherine on a walking holiday in the lake district, where he has been injured in a fall, and their friendship quickly grows into romance. The broadcast was introduced as the Lux Radio Theatre production heard on November 20, 1939, and the story is set against the routines of school life.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
