What happens
Phil Green, a magazine writer in New York, is assigned a series on anti-Semitism by his editor, John Minnify. Struggling to find a fresh approach, he decides to pose as a Jew for several months to experience prejudice firsthand. The story is a 1948 episode of the Lux Radio Theatre, broadcast with Gregory Peck as Phil and Anne Baxter as Cathy, and it adapts Laura Hobson's novel. Phil's son Tommy and his mother are part of his household, and Cathy, a divorcee who runs a nursery school, becomes close to him. As Phil begins his new identity, he finds that the people around him react in mixed and often revealing ways.
New York City, 1940s, at the offices of Smith's Weekly magazine and in Phil's apartment
Characters: Phil Green, John Minnify, Cathy Lacey, Tommy, Mrs. Green, Elaine Wales, Dave Goldman, Anne Dettry
Listen for: Phil's decision to pose as a Jew and how his colleagues and friends respond to the new identity
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
