What happens

In China in 1941, American truck driver Mr. Jones, played by Alan Ladd, is forced to flee the Japanese bombing of a town with his helper Johnny Sparrow, played by William Bendix. Along the way they pick up Carolyn Grant, a teacher played by Loretta Young, along with several students and an infant. Their journey toward Shanghai becomes tense as Carolyn argues that they should help the students reach Chengdu, where a university awaits them. This is an episode of the Lux Radio Theatre, first broadcast on November 22, 1943, adapted from the Paramount film China. The guide covers only the first part of the broadcast.

China in 1941, during the Japanese invasion, on roads and in towns between Maike and Shanghai

Characters: Mr. Jones, Johnny Sparrow, Carolyn Grant, Lin Ray, Mr. Chirks

Listen for: Carolyn Grant's appeals to Mr. Jones to help the students reach Chengdu, and his reluctance to change course

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
