What happens

Ella Bishop, a long-serving teacher at Midwestern college on the prairie, looks back over her career with her old friend Sam Peters. The story follows her early years at the school, her first teaching post, and her stormy romance with Del Thompson, which becomes entangled with her younger cousin Amy. Sam, a grocer who has loved her for years, stays close by as her life takes unexpected turns. Lux Radio Theatre presents this 1941 adaptation of Cheers for Miss Bishop, with Martha Scott as Ella and William Gargan as Sam, drawn from the film of the same name. The broadcast of March 17, 1941 tells the tale of a dedicated woman devoted to her students and to her ideals of service.

A small midwestern college on the prairie west of the Mississippi River, and the town around it, across several decades.

Characters: Ella Bishop, Sam Peters, Amy, Del Thompson, President Corcoran, Minna Fields, Hope, John Stevens

Listen for: Ella's decision to stay at Midwestern rather than leave for New York, and the quiet devotion of Sam Peters.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
