What happens

A storm wrecks a sailing vessel off the coast of Maine, and Captain January rescues an infant girl, whom he names Star and raises at his lighthouse. Nine years later, Star celebrates her birthday with the captain and his friend Captain Nazro. A school teacher, Mrs. Morgan, questions whether Star is being properly educated and summons her to an examination before the school board. The episode is the Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the 1941 story Captain January, broadcast on 27 January 1941, starring Shirley Temple as Star, Charles Winninger as Captain January and Gene Lockhart as Captain Nazro. The story is still developing at this point.

Listen for: Captain January's confident claims about Star's learning, and Mrs. Morgan's challenge to his care of the girl

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
