What happens

Lux Radio Theatre presents Battleground, a 1954 episode starring Van Johnson as Holly and George Murphy as Jarvis, adapted from the story of a squad in the 101st Airborne Division. Holly, Jarvis and their comrades rest in a camp in November 1944, then move up to the line in Holland. Their platoon sergeant, Kenny, and the squad's routines and friendships give the men a sense of ordinary life amid war. The squad is soon sent into a village, a new replacement named Leighton joins them, and German infiltrators begin to appear in their area. This recording covers only the first part of the episode, so the story is not complete here.

Europe, late 1944 during World War II: a rest camp, then a Dutch village and nearby woods on the front line with the 101st Airborne Division

Characters: Holly, Jarvis, Kenny, Rodriguez, Pop, Kip, Hanson, Leighton

Listen for: The squad's banter in the rest camp, the arrival of the replacement Leighton, and the German infiltrators posing as American soldiers in the fog-bound woods

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
