What happens
Reporter Casey Mayo, a human-interest writer for the Evening Chronicle, meets telephone operator Nora Larkin at the West Coast telephone company, where he is chasing a story about the switchboard girls. Nora, engaged to a war hero, spends her birthday evening drinking with artist Harry Preble at the Blue Gardenia, a restaurant where Mae and Louie work. Later, Nora's roommates Sally and Crystal notice her shaken and strange behavior. Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
