What happens

Professor Henry Barnes, a retired scholar, tells his old friend Professor Edward Bell that he plans to take his own life once he finishes a book. Shortly afterward, a young pregnant wife named Peggy Taylor, whose husband Jason is a returning war veteran, is evicted from her trailer and seeks housing in a crowded Midwestern college town. Peggy and Jason's struggle to find a home brings them to Professor Barnes's door. This is the Lux Radio Theatre production of Apartment for Peggy, broadcast on February 28, 1949, starring Jean Crane, William Holden and Edmund Gwenn.

A small Midwestern college town shortly after the Second World War, where housing is scarce for married veterans and their families.

Characters: Professor Henry Barnes, Professor Edward Bell, Peggy Taylor, Jason Taylor, Professor Collins

Listen for: Peggy's cheerful persistence in finding a home, and Professor Barnes's gradual change of outlook as the young couple move into his attic.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
