What happens

Guffy McGovern, the manager of the losing Pittsburgh Pirates, is a rude and combative man who clashes with Jennifer Page, a sports-page writer who has written a scathing article about him. After a late-night encounter in an empty ballpark, McGovern claims he has been visited by an angel, and the team's fortunes begin to change. Lux Radio Theatre presents this 1953 broadcast, adapted from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film Angels in the Outfield, with Janet Lee, George Murphy and Donna Corcoran in the leading roles.

Pittsburgh, a baseball city, during the Pirates' season, with scenes at the ballpark, a newspaper office and a children's home

Characters: Guffy McGovern, Jennifer Page, Bridget, Richard White, Gabriel

Listen for: The first encounter between McGovern and the angel in the empty ballpark, where the angel tells him he has been sent help from heaven

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
