What happens

In 1850 Henriette de Porte, a French teacher at Miss Haynes School for Girls in New York, is viewed with suspicion by her pupils because of a past scandal. Her lesson turns into a story about a governess in a Paris household of the Duke de Pralan, played in the broadcast by Charles Boyer and Betty Davis. The governess, who is using a false name, takes the post and grows close to the duke, but the household's mistress resents her. Tensions rise as the children fall ill and the household's suspicion of the governess grows. This is an episode of the Lux Radio Theatre, first broadcast on December 15, 1941, adapted from the Rachel Field novel and the 1941 film.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
