What happens

Alice Adams, a young woman from a modest household in a small New England town, longs for a better life and for the attention of the wealthy social set. Her invalid father, Virgil Adams, works for a wholesale drug company, and her mother pushes the family toward ambition. At a party, Alice meets Arthur Russell, who seems drawn to her. Her brother Walter, who has been escorting her, pulls her in several directions. This episode is the first of the 1938 Lux Radio Theatre broadcasts, starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray with Walter Connolly, adapted from the Booth Tarkington novel and its RKO film.

A small house in New England, a society party, and the Adams family's modest home.

Listen for: Alice's growing hopes of meeting Arthur Russell and her family's tensions over money and status.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
