What happens

Inspector Slimane, a French police officer in Algiers, is determined to capture Pépé le Moko, a wanted jewel thief who hides in the labyrinthine native quarter known as the Casbah. Pépé's world of smugglers, informers and loyal friends is shaken as the police close in, and he meets Gabrielle, a visiting woman who draws him toward a life beyond the walls. This is the Lux Radio Theatre production of Algiers, broadcast on 7 July 1941 and starring Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr.

Algiers, the native quarter known as the Casbah, and the modern city nearby

Characters: Pépé le Moko, Gabrielle, Inspector Slimane, Commissioner, Regis, Carlos, Pierrot, Max

Listen for: Pépé's growing restlessness with the Casbah, and his conversations with Gabrielle about a life elsewhere

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
