What happens

In Boston in 1873, young inventor Alexander Graham Bell works with eight-year-old George Sanders, a deaf-mute boy, using a glove marked with letters to communicate. Bell hopes to find a way to send speech over a wire, but his telegraph work and money troubles strain his friendship with his boarding house neighbor Thomas Watson. He also falls in love with Mabel Hubbard, a young woman whose father is wary of his prospects. Bell's experiments lead to a breakthrough in transmitting sound through a wire, but his plans for marriage and his work pull him in competing directions. This Lux Radio Theatre production, broadcast on May 14, 1945, stars Don Ameche and June Duprez.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
