What happens
Lionel Barrymore plays Dr. John Abbott, a small-town physician in Westport, whose life is recounted as his town gathers for his funeral. Among the papers in his strong box, his son Dick and the town's leading businessmen find a record of unpaid bills and loans, and they begin to weigh the old doctor's generosity against his debts. The story moves back through his years of practice, his care for the poor, and his dealings with the prosperous George Sykes. Anita Louise and Glenn Ford co-star in this 1942 broadcast of Lux Radio Theatre, which aired on May 18, 1942.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
